A veteran Miami Fire Rescue captain accused of assaulting Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies could see his charges dismissed if he completes a program offered by the state attorney’s office.
Authorities arrested Capt. Maximo Vasquez in June on charges of assaulting a police officer or firefighter, disorderly conduct, resisting an officer without violence, and misuse of 911. Deputies accused him of assaulting a fellow first responder while trying to report his wife missing.
Bodycam video shows tense arrest
Video obtained by NBC6 captured the heated exchange.
“Did I tell you I did not want a report?” Vasquez asks in the video.
“I asked you if you wanted a report,” a deputy responds.
“And my question, my answer was?” Vasquez continues.
“Go f— yourself,” the deputy replies.
According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a missing person call and encountered Vasquez, who appeared “visibly irate and shouting” about his missing wife. At one point, he allegedly threw a case card at a deputy.
“My wife is missing, this is all I get?” Vasquez says. “F— you, bro.”
The video then shows deputies struggling with Vasquez before placing him under arrest.
Court appearance and pre-trial program
On Thursday, Vasquez appeared in court with his attorney and another woman to accept a pre-trial diversion program.
Records show he entered a not guilty plea. If Vasquez successfully completes the six-month program, the state attorney’s office will dismiss the case.
The judge ordered him to undergo evaluations to determine if he needs anger management, drug, or alcohol treatment.
Back to full duty
Miami Fire Rescue officials previously confirmed they conducted an internal investigation and reinstated Vasquez to full duty.
Neither Vasquez nor his attorney commented after Thursday’s hearing.
