Miami-Dade DJ Faces Felony Charge After Repeatedly Running Illegal Radio Station

Months after the Federal Communications Commission fined him over $100,000 for operating an illegal radio station, Miami-Dade man Abdias “DJ AJ 305” Datis returned to the airwaves — and kept broadcasting even after the agency nearly tripled the penalty, authorities said.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrested the 50-year-old DJ on Tuesday, charging him with a felony for the pirate radio operation.

Investigators said Datis ran “Unique FM” at 91.7 FM from his home in the 1000 block of Northwest 147th Street in Biscayne Gardens. The FCC reported he had been directly involved in the station’s operation since at least 2018.

Court records show Datis faced the same third-degree felony in 2008 for unauthorized transmissions or interference with a licensed station. That charge came after a 2007 arrest by North Miami Beach police, and he received withheld adjudication.

Authorities said Datis ignored multiple penalties and continued broadcasting. The FCC fined him $120,000 on Sept. 26, 2024, then increased the fine to over $325,000 on Feb. 27 after catching him on the air in November and January.

Even that didn’t stop him. According to the arrest report, FCC investigators detected his signal five more times between March and August.

Deputies served a search warrant at his home on Tuesday during a live broadcast and seized his equipment.

In the February liability notice, FCC Secretary Marlene H. Dortch warned that unlicensed stations like Unique FM “pose a danger to the public because they interfere with licensed stations that inform their listeners of important public safety messages, including Emergency Alert System transmissions that provide vital information regarding weather events and other dangers to the public.”

Datis is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond.
