A man who was living in north Iowa after illegally returning to the United States and had previously been removed from the county was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison.
At the guilty plea hearing, 39-year-old Fabian Arias-Ramirez, a Mexican citizen illegally present in the United States and residing in Hampton, admitted to having previously been deported from the country and illegally reentering without the authorization of the US government. Arias-Ramirez was originally ordered removed in 2013 but fled and was not apprehended until 2019.
After being removed in 2019, he was caught attempting to enter the nation on several occasions and was deported each time. On April 22, 2025, immigration officers spotted Arias-Ramirez in Iowa Falls after he met with his probation officer following his second OWI conviction in Iowa. In addition, he has one Iowa conviction for criminal mischief.
On June 12, Arias-Ramirez consented to plead guilty to one count of unauthorized return into the United States after being removed. This is his third federal conviction for a crime related to illegal immigration, following two previous misdemeanor convictions for illegal entry.
Chief Judge C.J. Williams of the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids sentenced Arias-Ramirez to 12 months and one day in federal prison on Wednesday (September 10). He must also serve a one-year period of supervised release following his prison sentence. There is no parole under the federal system.
The Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Enforcement and Removal Operations conducted an investigation into the matter.
