Massive Mudflow Devastates Wrightwood Home During Holiday Storm

Wrightwood resident Misty Cheng faced a devastating Christmas after a powerful storm triggered a massive mudflow that tore through her home. Video shared with ABC7 shows a torrent of water and mud sweeping into the property, leaving a soggy, muddy mess in its wake.

Cheng described the scene as her personal “Nightmare Before Christmas.” The home, which she purchased three years ago and had invested significant time and money into, was nearly destroyed in minutes.

Recovery Efforts Underway
After two days of digging and cleaning, progress has been made. Cheng, along with eight men and one volunteer, worked to remove the thick mud, which was described as taller than herself. She emphasized the urgency: “It was imperative that everything be fixed immediately before it hardened.”

Aerial footage captured by AIR7 on Monday revealed widespread damage in Wrightwood. Officials reported that around 50 homes were damaged, including at least 24 in the Wrightwood area. Businesses were also affected, such as the Grand Pine Cabins, which had to close during one of the busiest weeks of the year.

Alise Carlson of Grand Pine Cabins explained, “Rocks and a whole bunch of debris everywhere… cleaning up the debris, making sure it’s safe for everybody to get back up here.” She added, “This is like our peak… it’s really impacting us and the community, but we can pull through.”

Looking Ahead
As residents continue cleanup efforts, concern grows over additional storms that could hit the already saturated mountain community, complicating recovery efforts for both homeowners and local businesses.
