Maryland State Police Investigate Inmate Death at Jessup Correctional Institution

JESSUP, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate at Jessup Correctional Institution, officials confirmed Sunday.

According to police, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was notified around 8 p.m. on Dec. 13 by investigators with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit regarding an inmate death.

The preliminary investigation found that the inmate, identified as 23-year-old Deon Smith, was discovered unresponsive in Building F. Emergency medical services personnel pronounced him dead at the facility.

Authorities said a suspect has been identified and is also an inmate. The suspect’s identity is being withheld pending formal charges.

Investigators from the MSP Homicide Unit, along with crime scene technicians from the MSP Forensic Sciences Division, responded to the facility to process the scene and collect evidence.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. The investigation remains ongoing.
