A 31-year-old Maryland citizen and previously convicted felon was sentenced to 55 months in prison for illegally possessing a loaded Glock 27 pistol.
The punishment, announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, occurred on November 24 in U.S. District Court.
On September 10, a federal jury found Anthony Eugene Burns guilty of felony handgun possession. In addition to his prison sentence, Judge Jia M. Cobb sentenced Burns to serve three years on supervised release.
On February 25, 2024, Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers on patrol in Southeast received a report of a rowdy group in an apartment complex on the 2700 block of Wade Road Southeast, which led to Burns’ arrest.
As authorities approached, Burns was seen sprinting away and made an overhead throwing motion, as if tossing a black object over a fence into a vacant lot. Officers briefly lost sight of Burns before discovering him hiding on the 1200 block of Sumner Road Southeast.
Officers returned to the place where Burns was observed tossing the device and discovered a black Glock 27 pistol with 21 rounds in the extended magazine and one in the chamber.
Burns previously pled guilty in 2017 to felony counts stemming from a violent armed robbery spree, including conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery, interference with interstate commerce by robbery, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. He was sentenced to 84 months in prison for those counts and was still on supervised release when he committed the latest conduct.
The MPD and ATF investigated the matter, which is currently ongoing.
