A man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in 2021 has been sentenced to life in prison. Alfonso Dixon, 56, learned his fate during a sentencing hearing on Friday after a jury found him guilty last month in the May 30, 2021, killing of Ashley Davis.
“Mercy in this case is not warranted,” said Judge Michael Rothschild as he handed down the sentence. “At this time, as to count one, the court adjudicates you consistent with the jury’s verdicts and sentences you to life in prison with a 25-year minimum mandatory.”
Before sentencing, Dixon cried as Davis’ family and friends shared emotional statements describing the devastation caused by his actions.
“1,608 days ago I lost her. No, I didn’t lose her, he took her away from me in the most selfish and deranged, psychotic way possible,” said friend Tiffiany Johnson Brantley.
“He deserves to spend the rest of his life in jail for what he did to my niece. She didn’t deserve to be run down and shot like some kind of animal,” said Patricia Wagstaffe, Davis’ aunt.
The Crime and Trial
Dixon was initially charged with first-degree murder for killing Ashley Davis, the mother of his children, but jurors ultimately convicted him of second-degree murder.
During the seven-day trial, prosecutors presented Ring doorbell footage showing Dixon before and after the shooting, as well as the video of the fatal moments outside Davis’ friend’s home in Miramar.
An interrogation video played for jurors revealed Dixon’s claim that he “snapped” after seeing Davis kiss her boyfriend the night he came to see his children. He alleged the man flashed a gun first.

Prosecutors also called Dixon’s own children to testify. They told the court they witnessed their father shoot their mother — a tragedy that unfolded on his daughter’s birthday.
Family’s Reaction
During the sentencing, Davis’ family described how the killing continues to affect her children.
“It hurts for me to know that they have to live without their mom for the rest of their lives because of the monster that she met,” Wagstaffe said.
“Their father’s decisions and their father’s irresponsibility, selfishness, recklessness and their father’s dangerousness is not their fault,” added Akeem Davis, the victim’s brother.
Family members said the grief of losing Davis will never fade, but Friday’s sentencing brought a measure of closure.
Defense Plans to Appeal
Dixon’s defense attorney, Joseph Dewey, said they plan to appeal the life sentence.
“Based on the charge that he was convicted of, he gets 25 to life. That’s what the law states, and the judge felt that life was appropriate,” Dewey said. “I argued for the lowest possible sentence, but the judge disagreed. We do plan on appealing.”
