Man Sentenced To 25 Years In Prison For Firing At Chandler Police After Tying Up A Woman And Escaping From A Hotel Room

A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for firing at police officers responding to a domestic violence call in Chandler, authorities said Monday.

Cody Long, 33, fired shots at Chandler Police Department officers in March 2024, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

According to preliminary police reports, he was charged with aggravated assault after strangling and kidnapping a woman at a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel on Interstate 10 and West Chandler Boulevard.

Long pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault, one count of weapons misconduct, and one count of unlawful escape from a law enforcement vehicle.

Officers arrived on the site after receiving word that Cody had tied up a lady to keep her from escaping a hotel room. He took her phone away, preventing her from calling for help, and threatened her with a weapon, according to authorities.

However, the lady escaped while Long was in the bathroom and asked for assistance, prompting a staff member to contact the police to report a domestic violence incident.

When police arrived, they attempted to contact Long, who then began firing at cops, according to prosecutors. They took cover and returned fire, hitting him.

Long was taken to the hospital for treatment and later arrested.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell praised Long’s victim for fleeing and calling for assistance.

“Knowing her life was in danger, this domestic violence survivor had the courage to break free from a violent offender,” Mitchell said in the announcement. “We will continue to stand with victims and ensure dangerous abusers face the consequences of their actions.”
