Man linked by DNA to Logan Square carjacking and shooting sentenced to 12 years in prison

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a 2021 Logan Square carjacking that resulted in the shooting of a woman, officials said. The crime was solved about a year and a half later after DNA from the victim’s car door was found on him.

Daryl McKinley, 22, pleaded guilty to armed robbery in exchange for a sentence from Judge James Obbish. Prosecutors dropped four other felony charges, including aggravated battery with a handgun, which he faced after his accomplice shot the victim. McKinley will serve for around six years, with credit for good behavior.

The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. on December 8, 2021, outside the Dill Pickle Food Co-op, located at 2746 North Milwaukee Avenue. Prosecutors claimed a 22-year-old lady had just completed shopping and was about to get into her car when an SUV blocked her. Two men came out. McKinley allegedly opened the passenger-side door as the second man shot the woman in the left arm and demanded her belongings.

Prosecutors said McKinley snatched the woman’s food and backpack before the two thieves escaped in her SUV. Surveillance cameras captured the incident, but authorities were unable to read the vehicle’s plate or identify either hijacker from the tape.

However, after officers discovered the woman’s car, a Chicago police evidence technician swabbed the passenger door for DNA. About 18 months later, the test findings revealed a relationship between McKinley’s genetic material.
