Bike and scooter crashes rising in South Florida

Crashes involving bikes and scooters are happening more often across South Florida.

  • Last Tuesday: Police said two men rode an electric bike illegally in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Alton Road when a white Ford sedan struck them. The crash threw both men from the bike, killing one. Officers confirmed the driver stayed on the scene but called the crash preventable.

“The electric bike had no business traveling on the highway, and we ask people who are on scooters [and] electric bikes to please stay off the highway and stay either on the sidewalls or the shoulders,” said Florida Highway Patrol trooper Joe Sanchez.

  • August 15: Police reported that 54-year-old Fabian Moses died after a 14-year-old boy on a dirt bike struck him on the Rickenbacker Causeway. The teenager remained at the scene but was arrested days later.
