Tucson police have identified the man who was hit and killed while crossing Wilmot Rd. with his family Saturday night.
Officers and Tucson firefighters say they were dispatched to the site north of 22nd Street shortly after 9:15 p.m. Saturday. According to a news release, 34-year-old Richard Daniel Townsend was crossing the street with his family but did not use an authorized crossing. According to witnesses, Townsend was behind his family when they crossed, and for unknown reasons. According to the announcement, Townsend became separated from his family before being hit by the driver of a 2007 BMW driving northbound.
According to TPD, the BMW driver has stopped and is participating with the investigation. According to officers, the motorist was not inebriated at the time of the incident. Police say no one else was injured.
According to Tucson police, jaywalking was a major contributing factor in this incident, but the investigation is still ongoing.
So far, TPD reports 14 pedestrian fatalities in 2025. At the same time in 2024, TPD records 21 pedestrian deaths.
