Man gets prison sentence for killing sister’s ex, says it was self-defense

Man Arrested for Shooting Child’s Mother in Pembroke Pines Custody Dispute

The San Diego County District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday that 33-year-old Raymond Lynde was sentenced after being convicted in May of second-degree murder for stabbing his sister’s ex-boyfriend 28 times.

At the time of the killing, Lynde had just completed a 12-year prison term for a string of armed robberies in Orange County.

He received a sentence of 55 years to life for the July 2020 murder of 23-year-old Ariel Burquez. Prosecutors said Lynde ambushed Burquez outside his Chula Vista apartment complex and stabbed him repeatedly. Burquez collapsed at his front door and later died from his injuries.

Reports stated that Lynde threw away the knife, hid his bloodstained clothes, and fled to Mexico.

He remained a fugitive for nearly two years until Mexican authorities arrested him in May 2022. The U.S. Marshals Service’s Fugitive Task Force then took him into custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

During the trial, Lynde’s sister testified that her relationship with Burquez lasted about six months between 2018 and 2019. After the breakup, she alleged Burquez damaged her property and even fired shots at her weeks before the killing.

Lynde admitted to stabbing Burquez but claimed he acted in self-defense.
