Man Dies in Officer-Involved Shooting During Welfare Check in South Bakersfield

A welfare check in south Bakersfield ended in a deadly officer-involved shooting Friday night after police said a man was armed and noncompliant.

The Bakersfield Police Department reported that around 10:11 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, officers were called to the 3700 block of El Alisal Street, near Hughes Lane, to check the welfare of a resident involved in a peace disturbance and allegedly threatening family members.

When officers arrived at approximately 10:20 p.m., they encountered the man, who did not comply with instructions. Police said he was armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Medical aid was provided on scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

The officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, which captured the encounter. The footage will be released as the investigation allows.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
