A man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting in Guadalupe earlier this week. The victim was identified as the Lyft driver.
On Monday, at 8:36 a.m., the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) rushed to Calle Bella Vista, just east of Interstate 10, after a woman contacted 911 to report that her boyfriend had shot their Lyft driver as they were being driven to their home.
Responding deputies discovered the Lyft driver, 51-year-old John Lucas, lifeless in his car. Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene, where detectives believe many bullets were fired.
On Tuesday morning, just after 9 a.m., MCSO deputies discovered their suspect, 29-year-old Angel Lopez, along Calle Batoua in Guadalupe.
When officials attempted to arrest him, Lopez reportedly attempted to flee to a nearby home but eventually obeyed the MCSO SWAT team’s demands, exiting the home and being apprehended.
“This arrest demonstrates our deputies’ and investigators’ commitment to protecting the people of Guadalupe and Maricopa County. “Our community’s safety is our top priority, and we will continue to act swiftly and decisively against violent crime,” Sheriff Jerry Sheridan stated in a release.
Lopez was charged with first-degree homicide and armed robbery.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Lucas, and our hearts go out to their family and friends in the wake of this devastating event. We’ve reached out to the family to offer support during this difficult time. The rider has been permanently banned from the Lyft platform, we are working with law enforcement, and will continue to assist in every way possible.”
