Man detained, charged with murder in fatal stabbing of woman in Harlem

A man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in an Upper Manhattan apartment.

Luis Marquez, 41, was charged with murder on Tuesday, only hours after police identified the victim as Carmen Lopez, 47.

He ignored questions as NYPD detectives led him from the 26th Precinct to his downtown arraignment.

Investigators suspect Marquez is Lopez’s ex-boyfriend, who was attacked around 4:30 a.m. Monday inside her apartment building on West 129th Street in Manhattan.

Police say the guy was recorded on a surveillance camera waiting for Lopez in her building’s third-floor corridor.

When she arrived, the suspect had stabbed her numerous times throughout her body.

She was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside in serious condition and confirmed deceased.

Lopez’s close ones never dreamed that anyone would seek to hurt her.

Friends, devastated and determined, battled the chilly weather outside the building on 129th Street to pay tribute to the 47-year-old mother of four known as “Yadi.”

She was a fantastic friend, a good mother, and so much more, according to numerous women who brought flowers and cards to express how much they missed her smile and enormous heart.

While her family requested privacy, friends exchanged hugs and tears, claiming Lopez had told them nothing about Marquez that would lead them to suspect she was in danger.

Sources informed Eyewitness News that a tip led them to Marquez, who had arrived at Lincoln Hospital with injuries from the savage attack.

He underwent a mental health evaluation before being arrested at the hospital.

He has no criminal past and is now awaiting his first appearance before a judge on a murder charge.
