La Jolla house-party killer dies in prison

One of two men convicted in a La Jolla house party drive-by shooting that killed a young woman has died in prison, state officials said Thursday.

Prison staff at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi found Malik Joshua Campbell, 26, unresponsive inside his cell Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Staff moved him to the prison’s triage and treatment area, where he was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m., about 30 minutes after discovery.

CDCR placed Campbell’s cellmate, Donte Walker, in restricted housing while investigators look into the case. No weapon was found, and officials are treating the death as a homicide.

Campbell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges in the June 23, 2019 shooting death of 20-year-old Nina Silver, who was standing in an alley in the 7500 block of Cuvier Street when she was struck.

The court sentenced Campbell last year to 24 years in state prison. His co-defendant, Odyssey Sellers Carrillo, identified by prosecutors as the shooter, admitted to attempted murder, voluntary manslaughter, and other charges. He received 35 years in state prison.

Prosecutors said the shooting, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. during a house party, was gang-related and that Silver was not the intended target. Silver was shot in the back, and three men were also wounded.

Campbell had been in custody since October of last year.

Walker, 29, was serving four years for second-degree robbery in Sacramento County and eight months for conspiracy in Placer County.
