Iowa Issues Black Friday Winter Weather Alert as Heavy Snow Looms Nov. 28–30

A sudden blast of Arctic air will sweep into Iowa from November 28 to 30, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and the coldest air of the season through Black Friday weekend. The conditions threaten to hamper post-holiday travel across much of the state, with heavy snow accumulation likely in northern areas.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines and La Crosse, northern and central Iowa face a moderate to high probability of heavy snow from late Friday to Saturday. Forecasters predict 5-10 inches in the north, from Mason City to Decorah, and 2-5 inches in the Des Moines metro. Gusty northwest gusts of 25-35 mph may impair visibility and cause flying snow till early Sunday.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, slippery and snow-covered roadways are expected along I-35, U.S. 20, and I-80 between Des Moines and Iowa City. Travelers traveling home or out for Black Friday shopping should anticipate delays and deteriorating weather Friday night and Saturday morning.

Temperatures will drop to the 20s during the day and teens at night, with wind chills near or below zero in northern areas. Residents are encouraged to prepare their vehicles for winter travel, cover outside plumbing, and dress in layers before heading outside.
