Inmate charged with strangling wife to death during overnight prison visit

A California inmate serving life for four murders now faces a new charge for killing his wife during an overnight family visit.

On Wednesday, August 13, prosecutors charged 55-year-old David Brinson with murder in the November 2024 death of Stephanie Dianne Dowells at Mule Creek State Prison, PEOPLE reported.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said Brinson called prison staff around 2 a.m. claiming his wife had passed out. Officers tried life-saving measures, but Dowells was pronounced dead. A coroner later ruled her death a homicide by strangulation.

Brinson, convicted in 1993 for killing four men during a robbery, is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole.
