Indiana man apprehended after making online threats towards U.S. Naval Academy

An Indiana man has been detained after sending an online threat against the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in connection with last week’s lockdown.

Jackson Fleming, 23, was detained on September 12 on suspicion of transmitting an internet threat using a social media application on September 11.

According to accounts, Fleming used an IP address to make it appear that he was on the Naval Academy’s campus.

A spokeswoman reported that a former midshipman who was recently removed from the academy had made repeated threats against the campus, forcing local and state law officials to undertake a thorough investigation of the premises.

The academy experienced a lockdown for several hours due to the threats.

Two people suffered injuries during the response.

According to authorities, a midshipman was injured by a bullet to the shoulder and was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being released on Friday.

A member of the naval security forces sustained minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital before being released.

The Naval Academy issued the following statement last week:

On Thursday, September 11 at approximately 5:07 PM EST, Naval Support Activity Annapolis security and local law enforcement responded to reports of a security concern at the United States Naval Academy. During the response, two individuals were injured. A midshipman sustained injuries from a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released today. The other person, a member of the naval security force, received minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being released.

We want to clarify that there was no active shooter at the Naval Academy. While Naval Support Activity has resumed normal operations, general public visitation to the Academy remains closed for today. A full investigation into the incident is underway with NCIS and law enforcement. We are grateful for the continued support and collaboration of our local law enforcement partners.

Fleming is currently facing charges.
