Illegal Immigrant Arrested by ICE Found Registered as Active Democrat Voter in Maryland

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Ian Andre Roberts, superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools, on immigration and weapons charges last week — and records show he was also registered as an active Democrat voter in Maryland.

According to the Maryland State Board of Elections website, Roberts, who overstayed a student visa from 1999, holds active voter status despite being a non-citizen. Columnist Dustin Grage first reported the discovery.

Republican Delegate Matt Morgan, chair of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, told Fox News Digital that Roberts’ registration allows him to vote in federal, state, and local elections, even though Maryland law prohibits non-citizens from registering. He also noted that Roberts has not lived in Maryland for more than a decade.

The House Freedom Caucus sent a letter to the elections board Monday, accusing officials of creating “gaping holes” in election integrity. The group criticized the board for resisting a Justice Department request for voter roll data, citing concerns about immigration enforcement.

“If illegal aliens are not allowed to vote, why would they be on the voter rolls in the first place?” Morgan asked. “It’s ridiculous. Everyone reasonable wants a safe and secure election.”

ICE agents arrested Roberts after he attempted to flee and hid in brush. Authorities said they found $3,000 in cash, a hunting knife, and a loaded Glock 19 in his vehicle. He already faced illegal weapons charges dating back to 2020 and had received a final deportation order in 2024.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners revoked Roberts’ superintendent license on Sunday, leading the Des Moines School Board to place him on unpaid leave.

Morgan said Roberts’ case might only be “the tip of the iceberg” when it comes to illegal immigrants appearing on voter rolls in Maryland.

“We have no idea how widespread this is,” he said. “This is uncharted territory.”
