Peru’s National Police said in an online video that they had arrested Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo and handed him over to Interpol’s headquarters in Lima. The announcement came just days after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an extradition warrant for Jossimar.
“The allegations against this man are horrific, and we will do everything possible to bring him back under our jurisdiction to be held accountable,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement.
Jossimar is charged with one count of murder and allegedly used a knife as a lethal weapon. Investigators believe Jossimar murdered his wife, Sheylla Lisbet Cabrera, on August 10 at the apartment they shared with their three children. Following the murder, Jossimar allegedly fled the country with his children.
During their investigation, police said they discovered security video depicting Jossimar “dragging a large object in a large piece of material” out of their residence. Sheylla’s body was discovered on the edge of an embankment in the Angeles National Forest on August 13, wrapped in the same cloth seen in the CCTV footage.
If convicted, Jossimar may face a sentence of 26 years to life in jail.
