Girl, 4, Killed by Falling Dresser During Birthday Celebration at Brazilian School

TERESINA, Brazil — A four-year-old girl died in front of her twin brother after a dresser fell on her during a birthday celebration at her school, the Kennedy Unit of Colégio CEV, on August 5.

Alice Brasil Souza da Paz had celebrated her birthday with her twin brother, Arthur, and classmates that morning. Hours later, police say a child crawled under a dressing table in the playroom, causing it to tip over and crush Alice, who was lying nearby. Arthur witnessed the incident.

Her father, Claudio Sousa, said the family received conflicting accounts at first — including claims that a toy had fallen on her — and still lack a clear explanation. “My gift was to bury my daughter,” he said. “We don’t want revenge. We want justice so no other child goes through what Alice went through.”

The school suspended activities for the week, offered condolences, and said it is providing psychological support to students, families, and staff. The case is under investigation by the Child and Adolescent Protection Unit, led by Chief Hugo Alcantara.
