A 22-year-old Georgia mother has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and child cruelty after her seven-month-old baby died from being left inside a hot car while she was at work at a car dealership in October.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Nyla Simmons was taken into custody on November 3 and is currently being held in the Lee County Jail.
Authorities said the tragic incident occurred on October 16 at the Kia Automotive Dealership on Ledo Road in Albany, Georgia. Investigators believe Simmons left her infant inside her vehicle before starting her shift.
Later in the day, Simmons reportedly discovered her baby unresponsive and drove to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced the child dead. The infant’s name has not been released.
Weather data from Weather Underground shows temperatures in Albany reached 88 degrees that afternoon. Police have not yet confirmed how long the baby was left alone in the car.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the GBI, which has taken over the investigation into the child’s death.
