A 54-year-old Georgia father, Durante Tolliver, has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting and killing his son, 32-year-old Durante Schofield, during a heated argument at a Buckhead apartment complex last week.
The fatal confrontation reportedly began after Schofield slammed a car door, escalating an already tense situation stemming from an earlier argument with his girlfriend. Tolliver now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The incident unfolded late Wednesday night when Schofield crashed his SUV into a building and called his girlfriend for help. She returned him to his apartment and allegedly made an anonymous tip to police about the crash. Once inside, the couple began arguing, prompting her to call Tolliver to help calm things down. Police were already on scene speaking with the girlfriend when Tolliver arrived.
Initially, Tolliver and Schofield appeared calm and left the apartment together, planning to leave in Tolliver’s vehicle. However, once in the parking lot, the argument flared up again. According to investigators, the dispute escalated when Schofield slammed the car door, and Tolliver opened fire. He later told police he believed his son was reaching for a gun at his waistband.
Police confirmed Schofield was unarmed when searched after the shooting. He had been shot 12 times, according to the police report.
Tolliver is currently being held without bond.
