Judge Mary P. Hatcher sentenced Jasmine Daebreon Grover, 24, to 29.5 years in the Florida Department of Corrections, followed by a year on probation. A jury convicted her earlier this year of DUI manslaughter and four other crimes, including DUI with serious bodily injury, in connection with the crash that killed 21-year-old Alexes Olivia Matthews.
On February 9, 2020, Grover, then 19, was driving a vehicle with three passengers, including Matthews. Grover lost control of her vehicle on County Road 476 while driving under the influence, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The car drove off the road and collided with a tree. Matthews was flung from the car, and it rolled on top of her, killing her.
An FHP traffic homicide investigation determined Grover was the driver. First responders saw that she had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and dilated pupils, all of which indicated impairment.
A search revealed a considerable amount of cannabis on her. A blood test later confirmed the presence of cannabis and etizolam, a restricted narcotic, in her system.
Assistant State Attorneys Joseph Church and Sonny McCathran prosecuted the case.
