A Lake County man is facing charges after deputies say he shot a woman after getting into a confrontation over an invitation to her house to play card games.
According to the affidavit, the woman’s husband tackled and battered the suspect, 76-year-old Michael Phillips.
Deputies went to the area just after 7 p.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance at a home on Sand Road in unincorporated Lake County.
The woman and Phillips were both taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the woman for a gun-related injury to her forearm and Phillips for facial trauma allegedly sustained during a confrontation with the woman’s husband.
According to the official declaration, Phillips showed up at the house, stating the woman had invited him over for a card game. Witnesses stated that he was allowed to access the carport area before the altercation started.
According to the police report, Phillips confronted the woman, called her the “c-word,” then grabbed a revolver from his pocket and shot her in the arm.
According to the arrest report, the witnesses phoned the woman’s husband, who came out to the carport and tackled and beat Phillips to the ground.
It is unclear why Phillips allegedly attacked the victim. When asked why he pulled out a gun and shot her, he allegedly told cops that “he had questions and believed that was the only way he would get answers.”
According to the victim’s and witnesses’ testimonies, Phillips had a prior acquaintance with individuals at the apartment and was invited to play cards.
However, the tone of the evening turned significantly, with Phillips allegedly insulting her with profanity before pulling a revolver from his pocket and shooting her in the forearm.
The gun was eventually collected as evidence.
Phillips was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case.
