Florida Inmate Faces New Felony After Spitting on Two Prosecutors in Court

A Florida inmate facing a probation violation is now facing additional felony charges after allegedly spitting on two prosecutors during a court hearing on Friday, October 24, 2025.

Scott David Alan Hedger, 45, of Tavernier, was charged with two counts of battery following the outburst at the Plantation Key Courthouse, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. as Hedger stood near a counsel’s table where Assistant State Attorneys Joseph Mansfield and Melissa Simmons were seated. Hedger allegedly lunged toward them and spat before deputies quickly restrained him.

Hedger was already in custody for violating probation. The new charges add to his existing legal troubles, and he remains jailed following the courtroom disturbance.
