A 59-year-old woman, Anna M. Adamo, has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and adulterating food or drink following the near-fatal poisoning of an 11-month-old child under her care. The incident allegedly occurred around February 12 at Adamo’s residence in Okeechobee, Florida.
According to the Okeechobee City Police Department, the infant—who could not yet crawl, walk, or feed himself—was dropped off healthy at Adamo’s home. When picked up by his grandmother around 3:25 p.m., the child appeared lethargic and unresponsive. He soon began vomiting a sticky, foul-smelling substance. The infant was rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, where he suffered full cardiac arrest and required 10 minutes of CPR to be revived.
Initial medical evaluations ruled out common illnesses, and specialized testing revealed ethylene glycol, a key component of antifreeze, in the child’s system. Investigators confirmed it was not a genetic disorder.
Police scrutinized the timeline while the child was with Adamo and found inconsistencies in her statements, including claims about her husband’s whereabouts that were contradicted by his own account and surveillance footage. Adamo was subsequently arrested in Georgia and now faces multiple felony charges in connection with the case.
