A federal grand jury has indicted Cornelius Alexander Thompson, 38, a correctional officer at Coleman Federal Correctional Complex (FCC Coleman), on charges of sexual abuse of a ward and receipt of a bribe by a public official, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
According to the indictment, between January 2020 and August 2023, Thompson allegedly engaged in a sexual act with an inmate under his authority. Federal law prohibits sexual contact between correctional officers and inmates, regardless of consent.
Thompson is also accused of accepting bribes between January 2020 and April 2024 in exchange for smuggling contraband into the prison. Prosecutors are seeking forfeiture of $24,550, the alleged proceeds of the bribery scheme.
If convicted on all counts, Thompson faces up to 30 years in federal prison
