An elderly woman who had been missing for months was found sedated and abandoned in a wheelchair on a dirt road in Mexico, about 200 miles from her home in Texas.
Authorities identified the woman as Nilda Perales Ramos, believed to be in her 90s. Paramedics said she appeared heavily sedated and showed signs of hypothermia and severe dehydration when they found her.
Emergency services received an anonymous tip on December 17 about an unconscious person beside a rural road in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross discovered Ramos slumped in a wheelchair without shelter, exposed to rain and dropping temperatures.
They treated her at the scene and transported her to the General Hospital of Matamoros Dr. Alfredo Pumarejo, where she remains under medical observation.
Hospital director Gerardo García Salinas said Ramos later regained consciousness and was lucid enough to give her name. She told investigators she was originally from Laredo, Texas, and said she had no close family.
Officials later learned that friends and relatives in Laredo had been searching for her for five months. Reports indicate Ramos crossed into Mexico on June 12 and was hospitalized shortly afterward. While she was in the hospital, her friends and relatives lost contact with her.
Authorities are now investigating whether Ramos had a caregiver and how she ended up alone on the street. Initial testimony gathered by Quadratín suggests she may have been drugged, though the substance remains unknown.
Ramos will remain under medical supervision as doctors work to stabilize her and authorities attempt to contact her relatives. Officials said she will be placed in a nursing facility once she is discharged.
