Driver Killed in Head-On Collision on Highway 58 After Attempting to Pass Vehicles, CHP Says

A driver was killed early Tuesday morning after allegedly speeding and attempting to pass multiple vehicles on Highway 58, leading to a head-on collision east of Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said the crash happened around 5:40 a.m. on October 28, east of Bussell Road. A 40-year-old man from Delano was driving a Jeep Cherokee westbound in the eastbound lane at a high rate of speed, passing several vehicles.

At the same time, a 50-year-old woman from Lake Havasu, Arizona, was traveling eastbound in a Chrysler 300 when the Jeep failed to return to the correct lane and collided head-on with her vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to Kern Medical for treatment.

CHP investigators said alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Authorities closed sections of Highway 58 during the investigation but have since reopened the roadway. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
