A former medical fellow at the University of Toledo was sentenced to jail on Tuesday after being convicted of aggravated arson for setting fire to a Sylvania Township residence in December.
Andrew Campbell, 34, was sentenced to 4-6 years in prison by Lucas County Common Pleas Court after pleading not guilty in July to three counts of aggravated arson.
As part of the plea agreement, three more counts of aggravated arson were dismissed. He must also register as a lifelong arson offender and “give up any interest” in a Toyota RAV4 vehicle.
Campbell is accused of setting fire to another local doctor’s home on December 7, 2024.
According to the prosecutor’s office, a firefighter was hurt while responding to the fire, one property suffered “significant damage,” and other properties were in danger of being burned.
“This case highlights the very real dangers arson presents to our community,” Lucas County prosecutor Julia Bates said. “We’re grateful for the swift action of emergency responders and the thorough investigation by the Sylvania Township Police Department and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office. We hope this resolution sends a strong message about the seriousness of this offense and that regardless of occupation, we will pursue justice.”
According to the University of Toledo, Campbell was a fellow in the Hematology-Oncology program.
Campbell was placed on administrative leave without pay on December 20 after the university learned of the criminal accusations against him. A university representative stated in July that Campbell is no longer employed by the university and denied additional comment.
