Detroit Man Charged With Robbing Banks in Ann Arbor, Ferndale

A 68-year-old Detroit man has been charged in a series of bank robberies across Southeast Michigan.

On Nov. 11, Ferndale police responded to a robbery at First Merchants Bank on Woodward Avenue around 1:10 p.m. Bank employees told officers that a man handed a teller a note demanding cash before fleeing with about $400. No one was injured.

Investigators later identified the suspect as Alvin Myron Murray, who is also accused of robbing a bank in Ann Arbor on Nov. 7.

Police arrested Murray on Nov. 13. According to investigators, he allegedly robbed a bank in Mt. Clemens shortly before officers took him into custody.

“Our investigators worked quickly, collaborating with Ann Arbor PD, Southfield PD, and the Oakland County Gang and Violent Crime Task Force to track down and arrest the suspect,” Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi said in a statement. “This is another great example of interagency cooperation. Once again, ALPR technology proved valuable in identifying and locating our suspect.”

Murray was arraigned Friday on one count of bank robbery and received a $250,000 bond.

“Bank robberies endanger employees and customers,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. “Thanks to law enforcement, the message to this defendant and any other would-be robbers is: you might get away from the scene, but you won’t get away with the crime.”

If convicted, Murray could face up to life in prison. He is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 24.
