Death Penalty Recommended in Brutal Tampa Double Murder of Mother and 4-Year-Old Daughter

A Hillsborough County jury has recommended the death penalty for Angel Gabriel Cuz Choc, who was convicted of brutally stabbing his girlfriend, Amalia Coc Choc De Pec, and her 4-year-old daughter, Estrella.

The jury’s decision followed the penalty phase of the trial, which came after Cuz Choc was found guilty earlier in the week for the double homicide. Prosecutors from the State Attorney’s Office pursued the death penalty, describing the murders as “heinous, atrocious, and cruel.”

Details of the Crime and Trial

Prosecutors said Cuz Choc carried out the vicious attack after becoming enraged when Amalia returned home late from spending time with a friend. During the assault, he beat Amalia with a shovel and stabbed her multiple times.

Tragically, four-year-old Estrella was found stabbed to death in the bathtub.

During the two-day penalty phase, jurors heard graphic medical testimony and emotional statements from witnesses. Experts described the pain and suffering both victims endured.

Amalia’s family, speaking from Guatemala, shared that she had moved to the U.S. to support her three other children, working tirelessly to send money home.

State Attorney’s Response

In a statement, State Attorney Suzy Lopez condemned the brutality of the murders and expressed sympathy for the victims’ families.

“Jurors saw surveillance video of a joyful 4-year-old girl dancing around with a lollipop. She was enjoying a simple, happy moment with her mother at the grocery store. Just 30 minutes later, the defendant would brutally murder them both,” Lopez said.
“This defendant will be punished to the fullest extent of the law for these senseless acts of violence. Our hearts are with their loved ones in Guatemala and the United States as they navigate life without Amalia and Estrella.”

The case was prosecuted by Death Penalty Specialist Scott Harmon and Assistant State Attorney Lindsey Hodges. Cuz Choc was represented by the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office.

The final sentencing decision now lies with the presiding judge.
