Davenport Man Re-Arrested In Publix Wallet Theft Case

A Davenport man is back in jail after authorities said he grabbed a forgotten wallet at a grocery store and then skipped his court date.

Deputies arrested 40-year-old Jon Carney on Thursday morning, November 27, at his home on Laura Court. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived around 9:10 a.m. to serve a warrant issued the day before for Failure to Appear.

Carney’s legal issues began two months earlier, connected to a September 15 investigation at a local Publix. Detectives said a customer accidentally left her wallet on a counter. Instead of turning it in to customer service or trying to alert the woman, investigators said Carney decided to keep it.

Security footage reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office reportedly showed Carney taking the wallet without trying to notify the victim or any store employee.

A Good Samaritan eventually found the wallet, but not everything remained inside. The victim’s identification and credit cards were still there, but $938 in cash was missing.

Deputies arrested Carney for the theft on September 16, the day after the incident. When he failed to appear for his scheduled court date this week, a judge issued a warrant for his arrest on November 26.

Authorities took him into custody at his home without incident, and he remains jailed on the active warrant.
