A high-speed street race in California ended with one driver in the hospital and another in police custody after a Corvette and Mustang collided in a dangerous contest on SR-99 near Standiford Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol in Modesto, the race took a catastrophic turn when 26-year-old Tyler K. Azadzoi of Citrus Heights lost control of his Corvette, rolling it several times before it came to rest on Sisk Road. The impact was so severe that Azadzoi was ejected from the car, suffering major injuries. His passenger, 28-year-old Ayesha Malik of Richmond, sustained minor injuries.
The Mustang’s driver, 22-year-old Raul Torres Jr. of Manteca, reportedly stopped briefly after the crash but then fled. Authorities later found him at his home and seized his Ford Mustang.
While police have not yet announced specific charges, both drivers are expected to face serious legal consequences, given the alleged street racing and injuries involved.
Street racing remains a recurring issue in California’s Central Valley, where long, open highways often lure drivers into dangerous speed contests. Authorities warn that such incidents can quickly escalate from thrill-seeking to tragedy — as in this case, where both participants lost far more than they gained.
