A Chicago man has been sentenced in Fond du Lac County for attempted homicide.
Lataye Smith, 48, was sentenced to 58 years in prison and 38 years of extended supervision Wednesday after a jury convicted him of three domestic violence charges with a deadly weapon for attempted homicide, mayhem, and battery.
The victim of the attack ran to the Fond du Lac Police Department in 2023, telling officers that they wanted to report a domestic violence incident in the 100 block of Main Street.
According to the criminal complaint, the woman told them she had an argument with Smith after he started drinking.
She eventually exited the apartment and drove away after the suspect assumed she had said something.
Smith, 58, seized the woman’s wrist and told her in the car, “Expletive, you are going to die today.”
According to Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, Smith used a box cutter to harm the woman, but she eventually escaped and ended up at the police station.
