Car Crash Damages Network, Sparks Major Internet Outage in Northern California

Thousands of residents in northern California lost internet and TV service yesterday morning after Xfinity reported outages around 9 a.m. in Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Lodi, Los Banos, and surrounding areas, according to the company’s service status page.

ABC10 reported that the disruption stemmed from “network damage,” leaving frustrated customers without service and waiting for updates.

Cause of the Outage

A car crash in Rancho Cordova knocked down a utility pole, cutting off service for Xfinity and Comcast Business users.

The outage spread beyond Rancho Cordova to affect Clovis, Fresno, Madera, Mendota, and Perkins.

Customer Impact

Residents flooded social media with complaints and pleas for updates. Initially, Xfinity aimed to restore service by 7 p.m. yesterday, but The News later reported repairs would continue until about 5 a.m. today.

Other Providers Unaffected

The outage only hit Xfinity’s network. Competing providers such as AT&T Fiber, Sonic, Fidium, and Optimum confirmed that their services stayed intact.
