A 28-year-old California man, Nathan James Sumpter, has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for brutally attacking the mother of his child. According to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office, Sumpter will serve two years and eight months in state prison for the July 2025 assault.
He pleaded no contest to felony assault likely to cause great bodily injury, felony dissuading a witness, and a misdemeanor charge for violating an existing restraining order.
On July 8, 2025, Sumpter went to his child’s mother’s home despite being under a restraining order. Police arrived shortly afterward, but Sumpter hid inside while threatening the victim and her family, forcing them to conceal his presence. Unaware he was inside, officers eventually left.
Once the police were gone, Sumpter punched the victim in the face and strangled her. The following morning, he attacked again, strangling her until she lost consciousness, then stepping on her face.
The horrifying assault took place in front of their 2-year-old child.
Fearing she might die, Sumpter later called the victim’s aunt. Authorities arrived and rushed the woman to a hospital, where doctors treated her for a fractured eye socket.
Sumpter fled but was soon arrested.
Butte County District Attorney Michael L. Ramsey spoke about the case, highlighting how domestic violence often occurs out of sight but leaves deep scars on victims, families, and communities.
