Baltimore Police Searching For Murder Suspect Released From Mecklenburg County Jail

The Baltimore Police Department is seeking a wanted murder suspect who was freed from detention this week, according to Mecklenburg County jail records.

Charles Anthony Boatwright was apprehended for a fugitive warrant in July 2025 and put into the Mecklenburg County Jail. He was jailed for months on a $7.5 million bond.

According to court records, the district attorney’s office voluntarily dropped the “extradition” charge against Boatwright on Wednesday. He was freed from custody around 9:32 p.m. on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Police Department announced on Facebook that Boatwright was wanted for murder in relation to a July 13 killing. Randolph Smith was recognized as the victim in that case.

“Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Charles Anthony Boatwright is urged to contact homicide detectives at 410-396-2100,” the agency said on Facebook.

Channel 9 discovered the original papers indicating that Boatwright was being held on extradition for homicide charges.

According to court documents, the extradition was voluntarily canceled since “no governor’s warrant was received.”

According to a representative for the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, under North Carolina law, a defendant can only be held for a limited period of time on an extradition warrant.

“After the original 30 day period, the case was continued twice over two months, as the law permits, but with no Governor’s Warrant ever filed and the next possible court date falling outside the legally permissible period of detention, the state was compelled to dismiss the extradition warrant,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.
