TOPICS: chevron right arrow icon BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — A man convicted of punching and killing a 61-year-old man in 2022 has been sentenced to seven years in prison, according to Kern County Superior Court records. Jeffrey Sellers received his sentence on Sept. 23, 2025, after being convicted on August 13 of charges including involuntary manslaughter, assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, and battery causing serious bodily injury for the death of Michael Davis in September 2022. The Kern County District Attorney's office reported that on Sept. 20, 2022, 18-year-old Sellers and his girlfriend were walking on Greenacres Drive with her unleashed pit bull. The dog ran into Davis' yard, prompting an argument between Davis and Sellers. After the dog was restrained, Davis began walking back to his residence when Sellers cursed at him. Davis turned around, and Sellers punched him in the face, causing Davis to fall and strike his head on the concrete. A neighbor witnessed the incident and assisted Davis, who was bleeding heavily and semi-conscious. Sellers and his girlfriend left the scene. Davis was hospitalized and underwent emergency brain surgery, but he remained in a coma until his death in June 2023. The Kern County Coroner's forensic pathologist determined Davis died from complications of blunt force head trauma. PREVIOUS REPORTING: Man found guilty after punching and killing 61-year-old man in dog dispute During the trial, Sellers testified that Davis was wielding a baseball bat when he punched him. The defense presented a forensic pathologist who claimed Davis fainted from emotional stress, not the punch. However, the jury rejected these claims, siding with the evidence presented by the prosecution. Sellers was credited 88 days, 77 for good behavior, court records show. He will serve his sentence at Wasco State Prison.
