Los Angeles Police officers pursued an armed suspect through the streets of the San Fernando Valley on Thursday night, according to NBC Los Angeles. The chase began shortly before 9 p.m. and ended dramatically when the suspect’s vehicle flipped after crashing into a parked car on Calvert Street in Van Nuys.
The driver, who was on probation for a prior shooting, sped through traffic lights and city streets in an attempt to evade capture. KTLA reported that LAPD officers deployed a spike strip, successfully shredding the vehicle’s left front tire and causing the suspect to lose control. The driver appeared to check the tire damage while still moving—a reckless action that likely led to the crash.
The collision occurred when the suspect’s SUV struck a parked compact car at the intersection of Calvert Street and Cedros Avenue. CBS Los Angeles noted that the impact with a parked KIA Optima caused the SUV to roll onto its side. Officers quickly surrounded the vehicle once it stopped.
Police took the suspect into custody after he crawled slowly out of the passenger window. He was conscious but appeared dazed. Officers immediately called for medical aid, and NBC Los Angeles confirmed the suspect was alert and breathing during the arrest.
The incident underscores the dangers of high-speed pursuits in metropolitan areas—putting both fleeing suspects and bystanders at serious risk.
