Armed Burglary Suspect Arrested After Shooting at Neighbor

Deputies arrested a 22-year-old man Friday afternoon after he allegedly fired a handgun at a neighbor while fleeing a burglary in Bacliff, according to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 12:09 p.m. on August 15 to a burglary alarm at a home in the 4000 block of Bayshore Drive. As officers arrived, the suspect ran from the residence. A neighbor tried to intervene, but the man pulled out a gun and fired in the neighbor’s direction, deputies said.

Within minutes, multiple Sheriff’s Office units, assisted by Galveston County Precinct 1 Constable deputies, established a perimeter. A Texas City Police Department K9 officer tracked the suspect to a nearby house, where he again attempted to escape. Officers arrested him without further incident.

Deputies identified the suspect as Diondre Ruffins, 22. He carried a handgun that matched the caliber used in the assault and had property belonging to the burglary victim. Investigators confirmed the weapon had been stolen during a recent vehicle burglary in Bacliff.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit interviewed Ruffins, who admitted breaking into the home, firing at the neighbor with intent to kill or injure, and stealing the firearm, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

After consulting with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office, authorities charged Ruffins with:

  • Burglary of habitation

  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

  • Theft of a firearm

His bond was set at $140,000.
