The Alhambra community gathered this week to pay a solemn tribute to a police officer who tragically lost his life in the line of duty last week following a high-speed pursuit crash.
Officer Alec Sanders, 28, died on Thursday, November 20, after a collision occurred as he attempted to join a chase involving a stolen vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. Near the intersection of Valley Boulevard and Edgewood Drive, the suspect’s vehicle struck Officer Sanders’ cruiser. The impact critically injured the officer and ejected a female passenger from the reportedly stolen car.
Sanders was immediately transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead despite efforts by medical staff, including a highly recognized trauma surgeon, confirmed the Los Angeles County Health Department.
Remembering a ‘One-of-a-Kind’ Colleague
A heartfelt vigil was held outside the police department on Tuesday night, where friends, family, and colleagues shared memories of the beloved officer.
“Thank you for being my partner and my friend,” shared an Alhambra Police Department (APD) officer during the ceremony. Another colleague offered a poignant wish for Sanders: “I hope that you finally got your Tennessee porch… I hope that you’re out there watching each sunset and each sunrise, all while listening to what you liked to call sad cowboy music.”
Sanders’ father spoke with CBS Los Angeles, expressing his mix of grief and pride, emphasizing that his son was truly “one of a kind.” He noted that everywhere Alec went, people showed him the same level of affection demonstrated by the officers at the vigil.
Support from the APD Family
The vigil drew a number of retired officers who felt compelled to attend to honor Sanders’ bravery.
“I hurt for them,” said retired APD officer Michael Orona, referring to Sanders’ family. “I can’t even imagine it being one of my children.”
Another retired officer, Dan Rodriguez, expressed that despite not knowing Sanders personally, he felt a deep connection: “Even though I didn’t know Alec, he’s a part of the family. He’s part of my family and in spirit, I’m here to help support him.” They stressed that attending the celebration of life was crucial as they understood the courage Sanders displayed in his final moments.
Suspect Charged
The alleged driver of the stolen car, identified as Steven Zapata, 27, was apprehended and has since been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the fatal crash.
