Agent Uses Handheld X-ray to Uncover $2.3 Million in Cocaine Hidden in Truck Ceiling

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested an American truck driver after uncovering more than 70 pounds of cocaine concealed in the cab ceiling of his tractor trailer during a checkpoint inspection in Kingsville, Texas.

The bust occurred on July 26, 2025, at the Javier Vega Jr. Checkpoint along U.S. Highway 77. A U.S. citizen driving a 2012 Freightliner approached the checkpoint, where a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the vehicle, prompting agents to send it for further inspection.

During the secondary search, the K-9 alerted again—this time to the ceiling compartment of the truck’s cab. Agents deployed a handheld X-ray device, which revealed 30 bundles of cocaine hidden inside.

Officials seized over 72 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $2.3 million. The driver was taken into custody and now faces prosecution.

“This significant cocaine seizure underscores the unwavering commitment of our Border Patrol agents to disrupt the flow of dangerous narcotics into our country,” said Gloria I. Chavez, Chief Patrol Agent of the RGV Sector. “Their vigilance and commitment to protecting our border and communities remain vital in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.”
