Actor Ernest Wesley Heinz, 46, of Port Republic, New Jersey, faces charges in a road rage shooting near Stockton University that left a woman injured and forced the campus into lockdown.
Police said the shooting happened before 1 p.m. Thursday on W. Jimmie Leeds Road near Redwood Avenue. A woman called 911, reporting she had been shot in the face by a male suspect who fled northbound.
Campus lockdown
Soon after, law enforcement ordered students and staff at Stockton University to shelter in place when reports indicated the suspect tried to escape through the campus.
The lockdown lasted four hours. By late afternoon, police executed search warrants at several homes in Port Republic, one in Galloway Township, and two vehicles. Around 5 p.m., officers arrested Heinz at a local housing development.
University President Joe Bertolino thanked students and staff for staying calm.
“The decision to issue the directive was made out of an abundance of caution, following notification from the Stockton University Police Department of a reported shooting incident in the surrounding off-campus area,” Bertolino said. “I recognize how unsettling it can be to receive an alert like that, and I want to commend you for your patience, understanding, and commitment to following the guidance provided.”
