An inmate from Rikers Island, Corey Henry, has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault and second-degree attempted murder in connection with two separate instances involving vicious stabbings of fellow inmates. According to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, the sentencing occurred today.
Henry, allegedly a member of the Folk Nation gang, was involved in the attacks over gang-related disagreements. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, who is dealing with chronic violence inside the jail, remarked on the case, saying, “This defendant attacked the victims over petty, gang-related disputes, leaving them seriously injured.” Clark’s remarks, as reported by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, emphasized a commitment to prosecute jailhouse abuse “even when the victims do not want to go forward,” assuring that perpetrators “will face accountability.”
On August 3, 2023, Henry allegedly used an improvised weapon to repeatedly stab and slice another inmate in the neck and face in the dayroom of the Robert N. Davoren Center. The assault was stopped by NYC Department of Correction staff, who required multiple stitches for the victim’s wounds. According to information obtained from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, Henry, who was seen on video surveillance with three other inmates, slashed and stabbed another inmate in the Rose M. Singer Center’s Enhanced Supervision Housing unit on October 27, 2023, necessitating DOC officer intervention once more.
Henry’s plea agreement resulted in concurrent sentencing, which will run alongside his jail sentence for a previous murder conviction in Brooklyn. Initially, prosecutors wanted consecutive sentences for the attacks. Senior Investigative Assistant District Attorney Georgia D. Barker of the Rikers Island Prosecution Bureau headed the prosecution of the case. Clark praised the investigative efforts of a team from the Department of Correction Central Intelligence Bureau, which included investigators Korab Hasangjekaj, James Ruiz, Jeffrey Rios, and Walter Holmes, as well as Rikers Island Intelligence Analyst Aryeh Halevy and Trial Preparation Assistance from Alicia Henry and Supervisor Netanya Pierrot.
