Residents Voice Frustration
The shooting drew a large crowd of residents who watched as paramedics and police worked at the scene. For many in the community, the violence reflects an ongoing struggle despite recent statistics showing a decline in crime citywide.
Longtime resident Kenny Ebron, who has lived in the area for 32 years, said incidents like Saturday’s shooting have become commonplace.
“It happens when people violate others or feel disrespected…so it’s the norm,” Ebron said.
He expressed concerns about growing influences in the neighborhood, including smoke shops he believes are harming the community. Ebron also pointed to a lack of programs and support systems for young people.
“The children have nothing to do…we don’t have after-school programs dealing with mental health or things that need to be done in our communities, so this is what we’re getting…chaos,” he said.
Calling on city and state leaders to take stronger action, Ebron said the lack of positive intervention has left residents feeling as though justice now plays out in the open.
“Court is done right here on the streets,” he said. “The judge is on the streets, the jury is on the streets…and if you get sentenced to life, you lose your life. This is where the courtroom is.”
