A Florida man is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter after investigators say he caused a high-speed crash that killed an elderly couple while driving his brand-new 2026 Chevrolet Corvette at nearly 150 mph.
Scott P. March, 63, had purchased the high-performance sports car earlier that same day. He was driving north on State Road A1A in Ormond-By-The-Sea on the evening of November 1 when he slammed into a Jeep driven by Thomas and Julia Ann Lauck, both 73. The collision caused the Jeep to flip, ejecting both victims. Thomas Lauck died at the scene; Julia Lauck succumbed to her injuries several days later.
According to a motion for pretrial detention, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. near Sandpiper Ridge Road. Investigators say March attempted to pass the Laucks’ Jeep at around 110 mph in a marked no-pass zone, where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.
Data retrieved from the Corvette showed that 5.5 seconds before impact, March was traveling at a staggering 147 mph through a residential stretch lined with businesses and pedestrians.
Witnesses described March’s driving as “extremely reckless,” noting that he had already passed several vehicles in no-pass areas and nearly caused multiple crashes prior to the fatal impact.
March appeared at his bond hearing with visible facial injuries. Under questioning, he admitted he bought the $200,000+ Corvette that same day and told the court, “I didn’t really pay attention to the numbers. I just wanted the car.”
Authorities also disclosed that two days after the deadly crash, March was arrested for loitering on a 120-foot yacht called Gale Winds. March claimed the yacht was his, but the actual owner told police he had no permission to be onboard.
March also has a prior DUI conviction from California in 2018.
He remains in custody as the vehicular manslaughter case proceeds.
