Police: Woman Attacked With Hammer While Jogging In Plano Park

A teenager has been arrested and faces significant charges after using a hammer to attack a woman jogging in a park on Thursday afternoon, Plano police said.

The victim was jogging in Bob Woodruff Park off Shiloh Road in the city’s east at around 5 p.m. when the suspect assaulted her with a hammer, according to a news release from the department. The suspect then fled the area but was subsequently apprehended.

Police used things found in various sections of the park to identify the offender, 17-year-old Sergio Noe De Nova Duarte. He is in Collin County Jail on charges of aggravated kidnapping with bodily injury, a first-degree felony. After processing Duarte’s fingerprints, Immigration notified police that they would place him under ICE hold.

According to authorities, Plano Fire-Rescue transported the victim to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

“At this point, we have no idea why this individual chose our victim,” said Andrae Smith, Plano Police Department public information officer.

The Plano Police Department stated that there are no public safety concerns, and the Crimes Against Persons Unit is still investigating the situation.

“This is a very safe park,” Smith explained. “If I were a resident, I would not hesitate to visit Bob Woodruff Park. Simply be conscious of your surroundings.”
